5 ways to bring your home from Winter to Spring

  • Swap some furniture around in your room! Changing the layout can change the whole feel of a room. Try focusing furniture towards windows or light sources rather than closing them off.

  • Get crafty! Cushions shouldn’t have to cost a fortune. Even the basic sewer can make a pillowcase and the options of colours and styles are limitless. Reuse the insert that you already have or pick up some foam from a local craft store. Then just pick some fabric, some ribbon or trim and you have a brand new cushion that is unique to your home!

  • Spring means flowers and floral prints! Rather than having to purchase new furniture or items to decorate your home pick some flowers or head to your local florist. Plants in pots are a low maintenance option and can provide some interest with the variety in pots. These 2 ideas can bring a whole new element of life into a room and warmth to a cold winter space.

  • Rugs, Rugs and more RUGS! By having a rug or mat on the floor it can add a form of artwork, colour or warmth in the subtlest way. They’re a great solution if you don’t have a lot of wall space or have children prone to knocking over delicate ornaments.

  • Have you thought about your window coverings? Why not stop in and try a screen? Screens allow light into a room whilst still providing privacy and light block. They can tuck into your recess to blend with and existing window covering without taking away from it. The best thing about them is that there is a huge colour range they come in to suit any room or style.

Motorised Roller Blinds are becoming a more common choice in todays modern home.  But why should you consider motorising your blinds:
  1. Ease and Convenience - Motorised blinds add a level of ease and convenience with the touch of a single button. Your entire house can be synced to a single remote control to open and close your interior blinds.
  2. Energy Savings - With the advance motorised control you can now have your blinds close/open at predetermined times or temperatures. So this can reduce the energy costs
  3. Child Safety - With popularity of roller blinds, there are many more cords  hanging from windows, even with modern child locks these still can provide ligature points.  Motorised blinds removes these hazards from todays home.
We can motorise any type of blind from traditional roller blinds, vertical blinds, roman blinds and curtains and plantation shutters.  You can also motorise outdoor blinds from awnings to folding arms.  You can also control your blinds from your phone to add additional flexibility.

We support both 12v motors and 240v systems with full details of our motorised options available on our web site at Motorised Blinds & Curtains

Security Doors and Windows

There are a number of security doors and window products in the market today.  The two relevant Australian standards for security doors and windows are AS5039 and AS5041.  These two standards deal with  the construction and penetration tests the doors must adhere too.  Some manufactures meet these standards other exceed these standards.  The good doors are all manufactured with a Stainless Steel mesh product which is made from 316 grade stainless steel.  The other advantages of those doors which exceed the standards are they are likely to also able to be used in BAL-40 rated areas as window covering to cover you in the event of a bush fire.

The main areas of interest in these standards are:

Test Result                       Anti Jemmy        Knife Shear      Pull Test             Probe test
                                           Test                      Shear Test

·       Hinged Door      Pass                    Pass                    Pass                    Pass

·       Sliding Door       Pass                    Pass                   Pass                     Pass

·       Fixed Window   Pass                    Pass                   Pass                     Pass

The final area of concern is how are the doors and windows installed the relevant standard in this regard is AS5040.
The areas of interest are:
  • the space between the security door and the striker plate should not exceed 3mm.
  • All visible screws should anti tamper.
  • All screws used to install the screens should be the appropriate lengths to support the standard
Full details of our screens can be found at Security Doors and Windows

Window Roller Shutters - Energy Efficiency

Solid window roller shutters will decrease both heat loss and summer heat gain. These insulating window roller shutters consist of extruded aluminium outer frame , an internal foam layer, adding both a noise and sound barrier.  As they are often fitted to the outer frame of the window they also provide another insulating air space between the shutter and the window. You can combine shutters with other window treatments such as draperies for greater insulating ability.  Roll-down window roller shutters also offer an added feature of providing protection against storms and/or vandalism.

Window Roller Shutters can be controlled in a number of different methods.  These include:
  • Spring Loaded
  • Strap/Winder
  • Motorised 240V
  • Motorised with 12volt & solar cell
  • Motorised with 12volt battery pack
Window roller shutters are available in a number of colour bond colours and can add value to modern home

Use Plantation shutters as room dividers in your Ballarat or Daylesford Home

Have you considered using plantation shutters as a design feature to divide rooms in your home in Ballarat or Daylesford?

Some might consider it thinking outside the box, while to others it is a practical solution. Either way, it’s an attractive decorating decision that bestows interest and functionality on interiors.

Internal shutters, especially in white, are a mainstay when it comes to window treatment. They look equally good when installed in a wall cavity between rooms, working effectively to connect and separate rooms with the easy tilt of the louvre blades. This gives you control of air flow, light and the level of privacy you want.

While shutters are stylish, they also give you increased options when it comes to linking your rooms. For example, using shutters to create a divide between a study and a lounge area means, when they’re open, the two rooms feel connected and the space seems larger. But close the shutters and you immediately create a private haven in the study where you can put your head down and get to work. You are hidden from view.

Hard-wearing shutters are also a cost-effective option as a room divider. They are quick to install, come in a wide range of colours and add appeal to your home.

At Taylor and Stirling we just love plantation shutters when used in interiors. They are a trend that keeps on going and diversifying. And it’s no wonder, because they’re just so versatile, don’t date, slot effortlessly into both traditional and contemporary homes and are a clever, flexible option as room dividers.

Ballarat & Daylesford Window Coverings

You can choose window treatments or coverings not only for decoration but also for saving energy. Some carefully selected window treatments can reduce heat loss in the winter and heat gain in the summer.  Window treatments, however, aren't effective at reducing air leakage or infiltration.

Awnings

Window awnings can reduce solar heat gain in the summer by up to 65% on south-facing windows and 77% on west-facing windows. You can use an awning to shade one window or have an awning custom-made to shade the entire side of your house.  In the past, most awnings were made of metal or canvas, which need to be re-covered every five to seven years. Today, awnings are made from synthetic fabrics such as acrylic and polyvinyl laminates that are water-repellent and treated to resist mildew and fading. Whatever the fabric, you should choose one that is opaque and tightly woven. A light-colored awning will reflect more sunlight. Awnings require ventilation to keep hot air from becoming trapped around the window. Grommets (eyelets) or other openings along the tops and sides of an awning can provide ventilation. The awning may also open to the sides or top to vent hot air.

You can roll up adjustable or retractable awnings in the winter to let the sun warm the house. New hardware, such as lateral arms (pivot arm awnings), makes the rolling up process quite easy.

Window blinds—vertical or horizontal slat-type—are more effective at reducing summer heat gain than winter heat loss. Because of the numerous openings between the slats, it's difficult to control heat loss through interior window blinds, but the slats offer flexibility in the summer. Unlike shades, you can adjust the slats to control light and ventilation. For example, when completely closed and lowered on a sunny window, highly reflective blinds can reduce heat gain by around 45%. They can also be adjusted to block and reflect direct sunlight onto a light-colored ceiling. A light-colored ceiling will diffuse the light without much heat or glare.
Curtains & DRAPeS

A curtain or drapery's ability to reduce heat loss and gain depends on several factors, including fabric type (closed or open weave) and color. With such a wide variety of draperies available, it's difficult to generalize about their energy performance. During summer days, you should close draperies on windows receiving direct sunlight to prevent heat gain. Studies demonstrate that medium-colored draperies with white-plastic backings can reduce heat gains by 33%. Draperies also stay cooler in the summer than some other window treatments because their pleats and folds lose heat through convection. When drawn during cold weather, most conventional draperies can reduce heat loss from a warm room up to 10%. Therefore, in winter, you should close all draperies at night, as well as draperies that don't receive sunlight during the day. To reduce heat exchange or convection, draperies should be hung as close to windows as possible. Also let them fall onto a windowsill or floor. For maximum effectiveness, you should install a cornice at the top of a drapery or place the drapery against the ceiling. Then seal the drapery at both sides and overlap it in the center. You can use Velcro or magnetic tape to attach drapes to the wall at the sides and bottom. If you do these things, you may reduce heat loss up to 25%. wo draperies hung together will create a tighter air space than just one drapery. One advantage is that the room-side drapery will maintain around the same temperature as the interior space, adding to a room's comfort.

High-reflectivity window films help block summer heat gain. They are best used in climates with long cooling seasons, because they also block the sun's heat in the winter. The effectiveness of these reflective films depends on:
  • Size of window glazing area
  • Window orientation
  • Climate
  • Building orientation
  • Whether the window has interior insulation.

Silver, mirror-like films typically are more effective than the colored, more transparent ones. East- and west-facing windows, because of their greater potential for heat gain, can benefit more from these films. North-facing windows won't benefit from them, and south-facing windows may benefit somewhat, but the benefit could be offset by the reduction of heat from the winter sun.
